Tethered Kill Switch Installation
INTENDED: 660R, Banshee | PERFORMED ON: Banshee | DIFFICULTY: 2/10

INTRO: A tether cord killswitch is an important safety device that can easily be installed on your ATV in just about 15 minutes. The purpose of the killswitch is to kill, or turn-off the motor if the rider and ATV get separated. One end of the tether cord is attached to the killswitch, and the other end to the rider. It is a required feature in most all types of ATV racing, but is also a good idea for non-racers. The following installation is being performed on a Banshee, but will be a good reference for all ATVs.

STEP ONE: Your first step will be mounting the killswitch itself to an area of your choice on the handlebars. Make sure it is clear of any other parts, wires, or cables and the working parts of the killswitch can easily move. Tighten down with the four allen screws supplied with the switch.

STEP TWO: Next unplug the positive (orange) wire from the ignition coil and cut the wire in half about two inches from the connector. Strip both ends of the wires so you have roughly 1/2" to 3/4" of bare wire.

STEP THREE: The killswitch contains two black wires. Take the longer wire of the two and connect it to the other two sections of the positive ignition coil wire. Twisting all three wire ends and then soldering together is suggested.

STEP FOUR: Using electrical tape, wrap the spliced wires thoroughly making sure there is no bare wire showing at all. Once that is done, plug the wire back into the ignition coil from where you removed it.

STEP FIVE: Now you can take the shorter black wire (ground) from the killswitch and again strip away 1/2" to 3/4" of the wire's insulation and mount it to any part of the frame. Make sure the area is free of paint, grease, and dirt. As you can see here, we simply loosened a bolt and placed the bare wire under the bolt's head and re-tightened the bolt. Secure any extra slack in the wires with plastic wire ties. If you had to remove the gas tank for installation, re-install it now and start motor with with tether cord attached to killswitch. When motor is running, pull the tether cord out of the killswitch to test if it works. If the motor shuts off, it works properly. Install any plastic body parts you may have needed to remove and you're done!
